Worship!

  • the Underground is a postmodern worship experience filled with multisensory experiences, an interactive message time, and a kickin' band. This experience takes place in a smaller club-like room in the MICAH building located next door to the main church at 680 State street. If you are not into the traditional model of church then this experience is custom made for you. The Underground meets at 6:04pm every Sunday from September to May. For information about this service, visit www.theundergroundexperience.org.
  • 8:30 am Sundays in the Sanctuary. The First Up Worship service is family oriented. During the school year, the children are invited to attend children's choir rehearsal. They begin the service with their families and go to choir from there.
  • 9:45 am Sundays in the MICAH Worship center. The Praise Service is an informal worship service. Worship is assisted by a praise band and projected lyrics.
  • 11:00 am Sundays in the Sanctuary. This is our Traditional Service. It features a traditional choir and hymns with more liturgy than our other services.

Small Groups and Programs

  • Portal Group meets Thurday evening from 7-8pm. This group is all about the quest for a perfect cup of coffee! (well, not really...) Come meet other college students and enjoy a time of sharing, caring and faith conversations.
  • Home Cooked Meal When asked what they missed most about home, most college students replied, "A home cooked meal!" This event happens the first Saturday of every month and is specifically for College Students. Meet in the Dining Room of First Church at 6:30pm for a great free meal lovingly prepared. Games and fellowship follow.
  • W.W.F Don't worry, there is no wrestling going on here! This is Wednesdays with Friends! There are numerous opportunities for faith growth, fellowship and great food. Dinner starts at 5:30 and then various study or fellowship opportunities start at 6:00 or 6:30pm. Come join the fun!

  • Women's Retreat takes place at Camp Magruder on the beautiful Oregon Coast. It is open to all interested women. The retreat will happen on February 10-12, 2006.

Service Opportunities

  • Young Adult Mission Trip This year we are tentatively planning a mission trip to Jamaica to serve in an orphanage and to help build houses. Dates are March 19-25, 2006 (Spring Break).
  • Thanksgiving Lunch held at First United Methodist Church on Thanksgiving Day. This meal is for those in the community of Salem who have no place to go for Thanksgiving. Helpers prepare and serve the meal on Thanksgiving Day. (Nov 24, 2005) Lunch is from 12-2 with preparation taking place in the morning.
  • 12 Days of Christmas each year the community of First UMC take on a needy family and give them Christmas in a very special way. Each night for the 12 days before Christmas this family receives gifts, meals and other necessities in an anonymous fashion. Help is needed in purchasing, wrapping and delivering gifts throughout the month of December. This is an awesome way to get into the spirit of Christmas.

Worship Volunteer Opportunities
These opporunities are all connected with the Underground Worship Experience.

  • Blackshirt Team is our powerful team of welcoming souls who learn names, pray with and help all those who come to the Underground, find their way around. This team is a vital part of the Underground experience each week.
  • Hospitality Team This team helps to feed the body as well as the soul. The hospitality team is in charge of making cookies and other goodies as well as keeping our top-notch coffee flowing from week to week. Hospitality team members must love to see people full and happy!
  • Sound and Multimedia a key team in the Underground. These individuals make sure that the sound equipment is operating properly and that the band sound as good as they possibly can. The Multimedia team are those individuals who put together all of our visual images and videos for each week's experience. Training is provided.
  • The Band This front and center group of worship leaders include both musicians and singers. Band positions are filled by audition. This group must have a heart and hunger to be in worship, and to lead others in worship.
